Individuals completing this apprenticeship will support the learning and development (L&D) function to contribute to, and influence, improved performance in the workplace at an individual, team and organisation level. The role focus is often on the practical delivery of training and may involve:

  • identifying learning / training needs

  • designing / sourcing training and learning solutions

  • delivering and evaluating training

  • working with stakeholder / business area managers

The L&D Practitioner will typically have expertise and competence in their specific field whether it be technical, vocational or behavioural.

The role can be more specialist, with a focus on and requiring in-depth expertise in a specific area of L&D such as learning design, eLearning or digital / blended learning. Whichever of these is an area of focus; the L&D Practitioner is future focused, understands the business context / culture and has a good grounding across the whole training and learning cycles.

Duration

The duration is approximately 18 months, with an additional 5 months for the End Point Assessment (EPA).

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements are set by the employer, but typically an apprentice will have an area of technical, vocational or behavioural expertise in which the organisation needs others to acquire through training.

Apprentices without English or Maths at Level 2 must achieve this before taking the End Point Assessment.

On-programme Learning

Throughout the programme apprentices will be supported, coached and guided by an industry expert Adviser and have access to our substantive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Progress will be tracked through our ePortfolio system, OneFile. Apprentices will follow an individual learning plan and complete tasks and activities to support each of the components and requirements of the Learning and Development Practitioner apprenticeship standard.

During the apprenticeship the apprentice will compile a Learning Journal, which is submitted at Gateway. The journal is a compulsory component of the apprenticeship that feeds directly into the End Point Assessment Learning Journal Presentation.

End Point Assessment

The End Point Assessment takes place once the apprentice has completed all the on-programme requirements of the apprenticeship and is an assessment of the Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours. The End Point Assessment is carried out by an independent End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO), chosen by the employer.

This End Point Assessment will include:

Work based project with Professional Discussion

The Work based Project is a real piece of work that will cover all aspects of the learning cycle including delivery of the actual developed learning solution. The work-based project is written in the format of a 2250 word executive summary report, followed by a 60 minute Professional Discussion.

Presentation and Q&A based on Learning Journal

The apprentice will complete a 20 minute presentation, presenting key points from the Learning Journal followed by a 25 minute Q&A.

Progression

The successful apprentice may be eligible to apply for Associate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) or any other professional body that recognises this apprenticeship within its membership criteria (membership is subject to the professional bodies own membership requirements).

Those successful may choose to progress onto the Level 5 Learning and Development Consultant Partner apprenticeship.
